You don't need to be ultra flexible to practice yoga. In fact, everyone can touch their toes, it just depends on how much you bend your knees! Yoga is accessible to all fitness levels and abilities and can improve flexibility, but also strength and overall mobility over time. Lots of people also find yoga is not just about the physical aspect, but find it can help reduce stress, increase relaxation and overall mental health. A yoga practice is simply that. It is a practice. It is about progress, not perfection.
You may be familiar with yoga from seeing classes at a gym or online videos, hearing about celebrities practicing yoga, or thinking about the many workout companies that sell yoga pants. However yoga is an ancient holistic practice that combines the physical postures (asanas) that people are familiar with nowadays, alongside breath control (pranayama), meditation, and wellbeing principles to promote overall health. The word yoga means to yoke, unite or join and was primarily about connecting the mind with the body. It has evolved over time with the development of more modern versions of yoga gaining popularity in recent years, opening up yoga to a wider range of students. Don’t let all this intimidate you, yoga is very much all inclusive, and is really all about what you, your body and mind needs.
Yoga can help manage stress levels through various techniques including movement and poses (asanas), breathwork (pranayama), meditation and mindfulness tools, all of which can help to change the state of the mind to become present, less stressed and promote a calmer nervous system.
Absolutely! Private yoga classes can suit a range of needs. Maybe you are time poor or can't make it to a studio when it suits you. Or you could be new to yoga or getting back into it after an injury and are looking for individual attention that you may not receive in a larger class. If you are still unsure, get in touch with us at hello@lotusyoga.com.au for a free, confidential discussion.
A mala is a string of beads used in meditation and prayer, and comes from the Sanskrit word for garland. It typically consists of 108 beads, which are used to count repetitions of a mantra, prayer or intention.
The number 108 is considered sacred in many spiritual traditions and in the yoga world, and is believed to represent the universe's wholeness and the connection between the individual and the universe. For instance, there are 108 energy lines (nadis) connected to the heart chakra. The number 108 can be broken down into 1 (representing God or a higher truth), 0 (representing completeness or emptiness) and 8 (representing infinity or eternity). The diameter of the Sun is approximately 108 times the diameter of the Earth. The distance from the Sun to Earth is 108 times the diameter of the Sun. The distance from Earth to the Moon is 108 times the diameter of the Moon. And many more links to this sacred number!
